Dear KC Families,
Welcome to kindergarten! My name is Sarah Conroy, and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I cannot believe that September is just around the corner! Your child will soon be taking part in the creation of the KC community, where each unique personality will be appreciated and nurtured.
Kindergarten is an important year for all families. Your child will form a new set of peers, migrate through a larger school, and even eat in a cafeteria! This may sound a little bit scary, but please do not worry. Your child will be eased into our routines and I assure you that they will feel secure and cared for in our classroom.
This summer has been very relaxing, yet busy at the same time. I took an amazing trip out west with my husband, Chris, to see The Grand Canyon, and also hike through Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks. The rest of my summer was mostly spent in my beloved home state of Maine, where my parents still reside. They adore our sweet Labradoodle, Meara, just as much as we do, and she gets to spend most of her days outside enjoying the fresh Maine air. I am bonafide dog-person, and I do hope that Meara will be able to come to Heath and meet the class at some point this year.
Families are my best resource as I get to know my students in September. For this reason, I will soon begin setting up “Listening Conferences” with each of you via a SignUpGenius. Please be on the lookout for this sign-up in your email. During this 10-15 minute informal meeting, you may share any important information about your child (i.e. interests, strengths, learning goals for kindergarten, etc.) The information that you share about your son or daughter will only enhance his or her learning, as well as my teaching. Please begin to think about what information you think I should know!
On the first day, we are asking for some donations to help us get our year started. If possible, please bring in:
Last names A-L:
1 4-pack of Play-doh
1 box of thin dry erase markers (any colors)
Last names M-Z:
2 boxes of tissues
1 box of sidewalk chalk
Do you have items that you are looking to get rid of at home? These items are entirely optional, but we would love to take them off of your hands!
On the first day of school, please send in a complete set of extra clothes in a small bag labeled with your child’s name. Accidents and spills are common in kindergarten, and we will keep these clothes on hand in your child’s cubby for any such events.
This is the first of many correspondences that I will be sending home throughout the year. Communication between home and school is a vital piece to a successful school experience. In order to ensure that you receive all of our important paper notices, please send your child to school with a small backpack every day. It should be big enough to fit 9”x12” take-home folder, which we will provide. I will most often communicate via email, but the communication folder will also be utilized.
According to Brookline policy, we will have a staggered entrance for our first two days of school:
Thursday, September 5th: Children with last names A-M will attend. Pick up is at 12:40.
Friday, September 6th: Children with last names N-Z will attend. Pick up is at 12:40.
Please send your child to school with a nut-free lunch on your assigned day, as well as a clearly labeled snack. We will be eating in our classroom on Thursday and Friday, and will begin going to the cafeteria on Monday, September 9th. On the first day of school, I will send home more information about our snack and lunch procedures, as well information about how to sign up for an account with the cafeteria so that your child can buy lunch.
The teachers in KC are well prepared for some teary drop-offs in the first days of school. This is not uncommon and we will be ready with tissues, hugs, and a few other tricks up our sleeves! Kindergarten is a big deal, and we know that your children will feel and express this in their own way. This is all a part of the process and I assure you that each child’s feelings will be validated.
Kindergarten will be here very soon! I cannot wait to see all of you, and I hope that you enjoy these last glorious days of summer!
Warmly,
Sarah Conroy
